Our community of St Mary’s College, alongside the broader Broome, Kimberley and wider Australia community, came together in a spirit of joy and reverence to celebrate the historic installation of the third Bishop of Broome. The ceremony, held on the beautiful grounds of our College, marked a significant milestone for the Diocese of Broome and our Catholic Church in our Kimberley region.
In a gathering that brought together over 400 people, including 18 Bishops, College students, staff, families, parishioners, CEWA executive and distinguished guests from Dioceses across Australia and beyond, this installation was underscored by the deep connection and partnership between our Catholic Church and the local community.
Bishop Michael Morrisey, the Apostolic Administrator for our Diocese for the last three years did a wonderful job welcoming our new Bishop at the commencement of the Installation. We are extremely grateful as a College for the dedication and commitment of Bishop Michael. His kindness, strength of faith and ability to listen and heal have been a special and welcomed gift for us all. We hope that Bishop Michael realises what a positive impact and blessing he has been to our Diocese, as he returns to leading the Diocese of Geraldton.
This installation of Bishop Tim Norton was a rich tapestry of tradition and cultural expression, blending the sacred rituals of the Catholic faith with the vibrant traditions of our Kimberley communities. The inclusion of local languages, music, and dance created a deeply moving and inclusive celebration. Students and staff from St Mary’s College played an active role, we are thankful for their contribution to this special event.
Our newly installed Bishop Tim, whose commitment to faith, cultural respect, and service has been widely recognised, brings renewed energy and vision to our diocese. Bishop Tim shared some heartfelt words and messages during the installation, emphasising his dedication to walking alongside the people of the Kimberley. He shared “I’m here for ministry and healing, listening, working, praying and I’m here for having some fun with you as well. Whatever it takes I’m really, really happy to be with you here in the Kimberley”
For the students and staff of St Mary’s College, this special occasion was a reminder for our College community of the important partnership of our diocese’s mission and our College’s enduring values of courage, love, empathy, acceptance and resilience. The installation of the third Bishop of Broome marks not only a new chapter for the Church, also a moment of hope and inspiration for the entire community. We look forward to having Bishop Tim lead and work in partnership with our College in 2025 alongside our incredible Parish Team, Father Liam and Father Patricio.
