Maths & Science

Mathematics

At St Mary’s College, students are given the opportunity to learn the numeracy skills required to apply, evaluate, interpret and communicate mathematical information in both practical situations and real-world scenarios.

We use the Math Pathways program in years 7 and 8 to give students the opportunity to work on a completely differentiated program, allowing every student to work at their own level and work towards filling any gaps they may have within the Mathematics Curriculum. The Math Pathways program involves a combination of individual learning, rich learning – which is more open-ended, problem solving style questions and teacher led small group learning – focusing on a specific skill.

In years 9 and 10 we transition back to a teacher led classroom style of learning to prepare the students for their Senior school education.

Science

Facilitating a journey of discovery in students, Science nurtures active thinkers who can explore the world and beyond by studying the natural world through hands on experience and observation.

In Science, students in Years 7 to 10 learn the foundations of scientific inquiry and further build on them as they are guided through a curriculum in Biology, Earth Science, Chemical Science and Physical Science.

As Year 11 and 12 students continue their academic journey, St Mary’s College offers a range of Science options catering for ATAR and General students.
