St Mary’s College Broome Year 3 and Year 4 students embraced a world of discovery this week as they attended the Kids Research Institute Australia STEM Festival in Broome, an exciting event held as part of the lead-up to National Science Week.
The festival provided students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) experiences, sparking curiosity and encouraging creative thinking. Throughout the session, students participated in a range of engaging activities and experiments led by researchers, scientists and industry professionals.
From exploring scientific concepts through interactive demonstrations to solving challenges that required teamwork and innovation, the students enthusiastically embraced every opportunity to learn. The festival created a vibrant environment where young minds could ask questions, investigate ideas and gain a deeper understanding of how STEM shapes our world.
Adding to the excitement, students connected with a variety of local organisations showcasing the important work taking place across the Kimberley and Western Australia. Exhibitors included Rangelands NRM, Kimberley Environs, Chamber of Minerals and Energy WA, Engineers Australia and the Broome Bird Observatory, offering valuable insights into environmental science, engineering, conservation and technology.
Teachers were delighted to see students engaged and inspired throughout the experience, with many already talking about future careers in science, engineering and research. Opportunities in our community such as the STEM Festival play an important role in bringing learning to life. Experiences like these encourage our students to think critically, explore new ideas and develop a lifelong love of learning. It is wonderful to see them engaging with experts and discovering the exciting possibilities that STEM can offer.

The STEM Festival also featured a free Community Festival on 12 and 13 August, allowing local families to continue the excitement of discovery and exploration beyond the school day.
