Follow the Dream Students Explore Dampier Creek

Students from the Follow the Dream program went fishing, crabbing and foraging at Dampier Creek last week as part of their Term 3 reward excursion.

After 15 minutes of walking through knee-high mud and being attacked by midgies, we finally arrived at our beautiful creek!

A huge thank you to Mabu Buru Tours for guiding us through the mangroves and sharing their knowledge as we searched for crabs and cast our lines persistently, waiting for that much-anticipated catch. The patience finally paid off when our very own I’sa caught a catfish that was definitely worth the wait!

It was a true On-Country experience in all its glory — from the calm of the creek and the peacefulness of fishing, to moments of feeling uncomfortable and even a little scared, including a possible sea snake sighting!

Our First Nations students truly shone through the good, the bad and the muddy! They embraced every challenge with curiosity, persistence and plenty of laughs.

It was a fantastic day that reminded us that sometimes the most rewarding experiences come from stepping outside our comfort zone, trying something new and connecting with Country.

A huge thank you again to Mabu Buru Tours for sharing their knowledge and helping make our Term 3 Follow the Dream excursion such a memorable On-Country experience.
