The Year 10 students from St Mary’s spent a week experiencing life in the real world through Work Experience placements across Broome. This year’s program showcased the incredible diversity of career pathways available in our community. Students spent time in industries including health care, aviation, mechanics, hospitality, renewable energy, education, retail, tourism, environmental management and the creative arts. These experiences allowed students to develop workplace skills, build confidence and gain a better understanding of potential future careers.
Students returned with plenty of stories to share and a greater appreciation for the world of work. Highlights included selling a $2,000 pearl, observing aircraft operations at Broome Airport, conducting microbiology and environmental monitoring activities, learning commercial baking skills, and contributing to local community projects. The experience not only built confidence and workplace skills but also helped many students identify industries they would like to pursue in the future, with a number already exploring part-time work and apprenticeship opportunities with their host employers.
We are incredibly grateful to the local businesses and organisations that welcomed our students this year. Without the support of our community, these valuable opportunities to explore careers, develop workplace skills and build professional connections would not be possible.
