St Mary’s College Broome recently welcomed students and staff from Xavier Catholic College for a two-week cultural immersion experience, strengthening the bond between the two colleges and deepening students’ understanding of life in the Kimberley.

The visit followed a reciprocal immersion earlier this year, where four boys, four girls, and two staff members from our college travelled to Melbourne to spend time at Xavier College and Genazzano FCJ College. This return visit gave Xavier students the opportunity to experience the unique culture, community, and landscape of Broome and its surrounds.
The Xavier group were warmly welcomed by students, families and staff from our college. The first week focused on building connections through shared classroom experiences, cultural excursions, and community service. Students attended classes alongside their St Mary’s College brothers and sisters, participated in learning, and volunteered at the Broome PCYC, Feed the Little Children and McMahon Kitchen for Out Lady Queen of Peace Parish.

Highlights of the week included visits to our primary campus to work in classrooms, a sunset camel ride on Cable Beach, and a tour of the Kimberley Land Council. Students also engaged with local organisations such as Goolarri Media and the Broome Police, and enjoyed recreational activities like local footy and journaling at sunset.

The second week coincided with NAIDOC Week and took the group north to Lombadina, where they stayed at the Christ the King School. There, students immersed themselves in local Aboriginal culture and participated in school and community activities, gaining a deeper appreciation for the traditions and stories of the Dampier Peninsula.
The immersion concluded with a special NAIDOC Assembly at our College and a cultural mangrove tour led by Bart Pigram, offering a powerful reflection on the connection between land, culture, and identity.

This exchange has not only enriched the lives of the visiting students but also strengthened the partnership between Xavier Catholic College and St Mary’s College Broome. It stands as a testament to the power of shared experiences in fostering understanding, respect, and lifelong friendships for our students.
