Walking Together, Reflecting on Our Choices

What an incredible day we shared on our Year 8 Retreat Day! It was a day filled with reflection, exploration, and connection, centred around the theme ‘My Choices’.

We began with a beautiful Mass at Nulungu Chapel for the Feast of St Matthias, celebrated by Fr. Liam. We heard how God and the apostles made the important decision to welcome Matthias into their mission, a powerful reminder that the choices we make shape our lives and the lives of others. It highlighted the importance of stepping up when called and following our College values with a listening heart.

From there, we made our way to the Broome Police Station, where Officers Cheryl and Justin generously gave their time to share insights into the world of policing and the importance of community service. There was awe and wonder as students wandered through the station, it was fantastic to see!

After morning tea in the Courthouse gardens, it was time to hit the pavement for our Amazing Race. Each Homeroom followed a different route through Broome, taking on challenges and reflecting on the theme ‘My Choices’. Along the way, students considered real-life decisions faced by people throughout Broome’s history some brave, some difficult, all meaningful. These activities encouraged students to think about choices they face in their own lives and the personal strengths we draw upon when needed.

The race concluded with a well-deserved lunch at Town Beach, followed by time to pause, reflect and enjoy one another’s company. Many kilometres were walked, and students participated positively from start to finish. Their cooperation, attitude, and engagement throughout the day were commendable.

Sincere thanks to our Head of Year, Ms Cara for her enthusiasm and dedication leading the team, along with our Year 8 Homeroom teachers: Mr Ryan, Miss Wendi, and Mr. Travis. along with Mr. Riley, Miss Melly, and Mr. Hazman for guiding and encouraging our students every step of the way. Your energy and care made a real difference.

The day served as a reminder that while we cannot always choose what happens around us, we can always choose how we respond – with courage, love, empathy, acceptance and resilience.
