In a wonderful display of community spirit, our Student Representative Council (SRC) of our College has teamed up with Our Lady Queen of Peace Cathedral for a series of volunteering opportunities through our Christian service learning to support our community. This partnership highlights the commitment of both our Parish and College to foster a culture of service and compassion.

Over the past term, our students have dedicated their time and energy to various volunteer efforts. One of the key initiatives has been their involvement at the McMahon Kitchen, where students have been assisting with meal preparation and serving food to members of our community on a Sunday roster. This hands-on experience has not only provided valuable support to the kitchen but has also offered students a chance to connect with community members and understand the impact of their contributions.

In addition to their work at the McMahon Kitchen, the SRC has also organised teams to help clean, Our Lady Queen of Peace Cathedral. Students have been diligently working to ensure the church remains a welcoming place for parishioners. Furthermore, the students have taken on the responsibility of providing fresh flowers for the church’s ministry. This thoughtful gesture has been greatly appreciated by our parishioners, adding a touch of beauty and warmth to OQLP.

A unique aspect of this initiative has been the involvement of students’ families and staff, who have shown tremendous support and engagement in these special ministries. Many parents, siblings and staff have joined the students in their volunteer efforts, creating a strong sense of community and shared purpose. This family and staff involvement has not only strengthened the bonds within the college community but has also fostered a deeper connection with our parish team.

The collaboration between St Mary’s College and Our Lady Queen of Peace Cathedral has been a resounding success, with both students and church members expressing their gratitude for the partnership. The SRC’s dedication to service has not only benefited the community but has also enriched the students’ educational experience, teaching them the value of empathy, teamwork, and responsibility.

Students have shared their heartfelt reflections on the experience so far:

“Helping others in our community makes me feel fulfilled and connected to our Parish.”

“Helping out the community gives you a good feeling and a sense of purpose.”

“Team building for a good cause has brought us closer together.”

“It makes me tear up with joy to see the impact we are making!”

As this partnership continues to flourish, it serves as a shining example of how we can all contribute using our college values of courage, love, empathy, acceptance and resilience to make a positive difference in our community. Our, along with their families, have shown that with a little effort, time and a lot of heart, they can truly make a difference! We look forward to continuing this ministry throughout the year!
