The Power of Base Ten Blocks

Our Primary teaching staff recently took part in a dynamic Numeracy Professional Development session focused on the power of Base Ten Blocks, a hands-on approach to deepening mathematical understanding.

Led by our fabulous Numeracy team, Ms Josie and Ms Melissa, the session transformed teachers into learners once again. Through engaging activities and collaborative exploration, staff discovered how Base Ten Blocks can be used to effectively teach place value, and support student learning in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

This inspiring session and new resources was made possible thanks to the generous support of our College Parents & Friends Association, who funded the purchase of these valuable resources. Their contribution is helping to make mathematics more meaningful, accessible, and fun for our students.

The impact of the PD was felt immediately in classrooms. In Year 2 Yirraman-ga, Ms Dani challenged her students to build their names using Base Ten Blocks. A creative task that sparked excitement and revealed deep insights into their understanding of place value. Similarly, in Year 1 Wanggaja, Ms Zoe’s students enthusiastically took on the challenge, demonstrating strong engagement and mathematical thinking.

Ms Dani and Ms Zoe shared that the activity was not only fun but also a powerful way to connect professional learning with classroom practice. It was a fantastic example of how hands-on resources can bring abstract concepts to life.

We are proud to support our teachers in their ongoing professional growth and grateful to our P&F for helping us make maths a subject our students can truly enjoy.
