Students from St Mary’s College Broome have returned from an enriching and eye-opening journey through Japan, deepening their cultural understanding and strengthening their long-standing relationship with the town of Taiji.

The tour, involving Year 10 and 11 students, took them across several iconic locations, including Osaka, the World Expo, Hiroshima, Miyajima Island, Kyoto, and Taiji. The experience offered a unique blend of historical reflection, cultural immersion, and global connection.

In Hiroshima, students visited the Peace Memorial Park, where they learned about the profound impact of World War II and the resilience of the Japanese people. A trip to Miyajima Island allowed them to marvel at the famous floating torii gate and experience the island’s serene beauty.

Kyoto provided an opportunity to visit traditional temples and experience the rich history of Japan’s former capital, while shopping excursions gave students a taste of modern Japanese culture.

A significant highlight of the tour was the visit to Taiji, a town with which St Mary’s College Broome has a valued sister-city relationship. The students were warmly welcomed at the kindergarten, primary, and elementary schools, where they spent the day engaging with students and teachers.

Their time in Taiji included visits to the museum, the stunning Nashi Falls, and a traditional tea ceremony, allowing them to experience firsthand the deep-rooted traditions of Japanese hospitality. They also explored the Whale Museum, furthering their understanding of the town’s heritage and connection to the sea.

One of the most memorable moments was attending the civic reception, where students were formally welcomed by the local community, reinforcing the special bond between Broome and Taiji.

The tour proved to be more than just an educational excursion—it was a journey of friendship, learning, and cultural appreciation. As students return home, they bring with them cherished memories and newfound perspectives that will last a lifetime.

The connection between St Mary’s College Broome and Taiji continues to grow, demonstrating an acknowledgement of our shared history, the power of global friendships and educational exchanges in shaping young minds and fostering mutual understanding between cultures.
