At our College, learning goes beyond our classroom walls, connecting students to both culture and curiosity through meaningful, hands-on experiences.

Our Year 7 students had the honour of sitting with Merrilee Lands to mark National Sorry Day. Merrilee is highly respected member of our community and a consultant with CEWA First Nations Team. Gathered in a circle, students listened deeply as stories were shared about the Stolen Generations, the importance of truth-telling, and the power of healing through community and understanding. The session created a safe space for students to ask questions, reflect on Australia’s history, and understand their role in reconciliation moving forward.

Meanwhile, in our science labs, Year 10 students were launching their learning – literally. As part of a unit on energy transformation and motion, students took part in a high-energy, hands-on lesson designing and testing their own rockets. Using PVC pipes, paper, and force, students explored how different variables affect motion, trajectory, and energy transfer. The project encouraged teamwork, creativity, and a love of learning through experimentation.

Science teacher Mr Glen said, “Students are engaged because they’re building, testing, and seeing the results in action.”
These two very different but equally powerful learning experiences reflect the heart of St Mary’s College: a place where students grow through connection to culture, to knowledge, and to each other.

Learning in action!
