Smoking & Blessing – A Powerful and Meaningful Start

School News

February 11, 2025

We commenced our first day of the new school year with a deeply meaningful and uplifting blessing and smoking ceremony on our primary and secondary campuses, bringing together our students, staff, and families from K-12 in a spirit of unity and renewal to ensure strong liyarns and minds to commence our 2025 year together.

We celebrated what our college values of courage, love, empathy, acceptance and resilience meant in action and drew on the strength of smoking and blessing to make us strong and committed to our clear expectations by being our best to be responsible, be respectful and be kind as the mark of our 2025 year together.

Embracing both ancient wisdom and our Catholic faith, we combined the sacred practice of smoking with the traditional blessing of holy water. For thousands of years, First Nations People have used smoking ceremonies to cleanse and bring positive energy, ensuring the well-being of all who gather on Country. This year, once again we welcomed Ms. Di Appleby who lead us in this powerful ceremonies, filling the air with purpose and connection to yawuru country and our faith.

Father Liam then blessed our community with holy water, a reminder of the Sacrament of Baptism and the protection it brings, giving us hope and renewal for our 2025 year ahead. This sacred tradition ensures we begin the year with gratitude, peace through our listening hearts and a commitment to fostering a vibrant learning environment with high expectations for us all.

With strong hearts and spirits, we step into 2025 feeling refreshed, connected, and ready for an incredible year ahead!
