School News

October 15, 2024

St Mary’s College student, Lei Yuen, recently applied for the Country to Canberra Youth Leadership Power Trip. Of all the WA entries Lei was the winner, and 1 of only 15 students selected across Australia to attend!

Lei is a 16 year old, Year 10 student who has attended St Mary’s College since Kindergarten. She has lived in Broome all her life, and embraces the wonderful opportunities available to her as a St Mary’s College student.

Her previous speech which she wrote for the Youth Parliament in July inspired her to submit a speech for the “Raise our Voice Campaign”

Politicians across the country committed to reading a speech written by a young person in their electorate. (Lei’s speech was successful and had her speech delivered in Parliament by Melissa Price (Member for Durack – it will be written into the Hansard record forever!) The speech was read during the Youth Voice in Parliament week 7-10 October.

Listen to the speech as read by Hon Melissa Price MP here!

Lei’s speech covered a call for Action and awareness for more education on sexual assault and education across the country. She wants the nation to become more aware and not just in her local community.

The Campaign quote was “What do you want your community to look like in the next 10 years, and what can the next parliament do to achieve it?”

Lei’s win will see her experience an all expenses paid trip to Canberra in November. Lei will participate in:

  • Targeted public speaking and presentation workshops from industry professionals.
  • Personalised leadership coaching and support.

She will also get to engage with:

  • Q&As with CEO’s, industry leaders, and inspiring activists.
  • Powerful discussions and private meetings with state and federal politicians.
  • The chance to connect with other incredible like-minded women and non-binary people from all across rural and remote Australia!
