Movie Night Under the Stars for Wiriny Buru

On Wednesday 23 July, a fabulous group of our college students from Wiriny Buru enjoyed a magical evening under the stars at Broome’s iconic Sun Pictures, attending a screening of How to Train Your Dragon. This excursion was designed to support students’ social and emotional development in a safe and inclusive community setting.

This special evening provided a valuable opportunity for our students to build confidence and independence while engaging with trusted adults outside their family network. It also encouraged peer connection, empathy, and mutual support – core values we nurture at our College.

The film’s themes resonated deeply with many students, particularly the idea of dragons being misunderstood. Several students shared that they could relate to feeling frustrated or angry when they are not understood by others. These reflections sparked meaningful conversations on the bus ride home and continued in Wiriny Buru over the following days, allowing students to explore their emotions and experiences in a supportive environment.

Staff were incredibly proud of the students’ behaviour and engagement throughout the evening. Students demonstrated college expectations of being respectful, engaged, and wonderful role models in the community, truly embodying the spirit of our College.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Sun Pictures for hosting us and to all staff and families who made this special night possible. Thanks to our Director of Learning Diversity, Mrs Nat Giancono who led this opportunity with our incredible Wiriny Buru team. It was a beautiful reminder of the power of storytelling, connection, and inclusion.
