In a remarkable event aimed at empowering the next generation of female leaders, students from St. Mary’s College and Broome Senior High School gathered for the Inspiring Female Leaders Forum. The event, sponsored by Rio Tinto’s Winu project, featured an impressive lineup of guest speakers, including world champion boxer Louisa “Lulu” Hawton, Olympic gold medalist Brooke Hanson, and special guest Bernadette Harris from Rio Tinto.

The forum, inspired by the Women’s Leadership Forum, provided an invaluable opportunity for young women in years 10 to 12 to hear inspiring stories from accomplished female leaders. The event aimed to motivate and encourage students to pursue their dreams and break barriers in their respective fields.

Louisa “Lulu” Hawton, is a two-time world champion boxer who has held both the WBC and WBO titles in multiple weight divisions. Born in Western Australia with roots in the Philippines, Lulu’s journey from skateboarding to world boxing crowns is a testament to her resilience and determination.

Brooke Hanson, an Olympic gold and silver medalist, is one of Australia’s most recognised Olympians. After making her debut at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, Brooke went on to represent Australia in numerous international championships. Her journey to Olympic success in 2004, after missing two previous Olympic teams, is a story of perseverance and dedication.

Bernadette Harris, the Communications Development Officer at Rio Tinto, brought a wealth of experience and insight to the forum. With over 20 years in the mining industry, Bernadette is dedicated to mentoring and encouraging young people to take on leadership roles in their communities.

The Inspiring Female Leaders Forum was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impact on the young women who attended. Through the powerful stories and experiences shared by the guest speakers, students were encouraged to believe in themselves and pursue their aspirations with confidence and determination. We are grateful to our very own Deputy Principal, Mrs Antonietta Scriva for arranging this incredible opportunity for the students of Broome.
