This term, Year 3 students at St. Mary’s School are diving into an exciting design thinking project inspired by the book Iggy Peck, Architect. Using the story as a springboard, the students will work through the St. Mary’s Design Thinking Cycle to create functional and safe bridges. The challenge encourages young minds to apply STEAM principles while fostering creativity and problem-solving skills. We were lucky enough to have our first guest speaker to help launch the project, Architect Tommaso Trentin who shared his story and helped explain the main principles behind building. He also chose some inspiring images of bridges around the world to engage the students.
Students will utilize reused materials from the school’s maker space station to construct their bridge designs. Throughout the project, they will test and refine their creations, ensuring both functionality and safety. The initiative not only promotes sustainability through the use of recycled materials but also provides a hands-on learning experience. The school community eagerly anticipates the innovative and imaginative solutions the students will develop.
