The West Kimberley Careers Expo is an annual event designed to make students and other job seekers aware of the career pathways and opportunities available to them in the West Kimberley region. St Mary’s students from Years 6 to 12 attended the Expo on Friday May 16. With over 60 exhibitors, students were able to speak to people in a wide variety of industries and engage in a range of activities!
In the lead up to the event, the Year 9 Careers classes made a wonderful contribution to the event by joining forces to stick stickers on 1500 bags! Students formed teams of four people, discussed the roles each person would play in the team, and the best strategy to stick as many stickers on bags as possible in 45 minutes! These bags were enjoyed by the event’s visitors who benefit from some fabulous gifts at the expo!
Senior students in particular benefited from the experience. Miranda said, “There were a lot more stalls than last year, and a lot of people caring about kids’ future careers. There were a lot of good quizzes and prizes. Companies were there 100% for the kids.” Tyler was grateful for the opportunity. “I spoke to the people in the industries I was interested in. I just wish we had more time with them!” Other students enjoyed the chance to have more in depth conversations with University representatives following the University Roadshow presentation the previous day.
There was even a live radio broadcast from the event from our St Mary’s College students who are completing a Certificate II in Creative Industries with Goolarri Media. Miranda is one of those students and she said, “I was very nervous but it was a good experience. I got through it!”
Igniting career curiosity from a young age supports students in feeling confident in their future pathways.
