Our College, alongside the wider Catholic community of Broome, recently marked a profound moment in its history, celebrating 54 years of Christian Brother presence in the Kimberley. With deep gratitude and reverence, our community came together to honour the legacy of the Christian Brothers, one of our College’s founding orders. Their commitment to education, faith, and justice has shaped generations of students and families across the Kimberley region.

An official farewell was held last week, bringing together Christian Brothers from across Australia, along with family, friends, and members of the wider Catholic community. The gathering was a moving tribute to the Brothers’ enduring mission and the relationships they have built over more than five decades.

The Christian Brothers first arrived in the Kimberley in 1971, answering a call to serve in remote and culturally rich communities. Their work at our College has been marked by a deep respect for Aboriginal culture, a passion for inclusive education, and a tireless dedication to nurturing young minds and hearts. Their legacy is woven into the very fabric of our College, from the grounds, classrooms and chapel to the values we uphold today.

A cherished memory from this legacy includes Brother Brian Clery, former Principal of Nulungu College, who fondly recalls planting an Indian Nut tree in 1978. At the time, he had no idea what the tree might look like, yet today it stands tall as a living symbol of growth, hope, and the enduring presence of the Christian Brothers in our community.

As we prepare to formally farewell the last of our Christian Brothers, Br Berkeley and Br Peter, from Broome in October, we reflect on the profound impact they have had. Their presence has been more than educational; it has been spiritual, cultural, and deeply personal. They have walked alongside our community in times of joy and challenge, always guided by the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice, to stand in solidarity with the marginalised and to live out the Gospel through action.

Though their physical presence may be departing, the Christian Brothers will always hold a special place in the heart of our College. Their legacy lives on in our mission, our students, our staff, our families, and our commitment to justice, compassion, and reconciliation.

We thank the Christian Brothers for their extraordinary service and pray that their journey forward continues to be blessed. May their story remain a guiding light for our College and community for generations to come.

We will remember our founding order with fondness and importance.
