Our Year 11 and 12 Visual Art students were invited by Broome Shire to participate in a Footpath Activation Event to raise awareness about the Shire’s commitment to increasing healthy and active lifestyles in Broome.
This event promoted the new bike path linking St Mary’s College and Broome Senior Highschool to the Pump Track and BRAC. The purpose of this excursion was to see the impact of community art in public spaces and to encourage healthy lifestyles. The students engaged with the Shire and a local artist to create small sculptures of modes of transport that increase fitness and have no environmental impact. Students used their creative thinking skills and materials such as wire, buttons and cardboard to build their objects. The sculptures included bikes, skateboards, scooters, roller blades and even a penny-farthing style bicycle.
Our excursion coincided with our College celebration of Book Week, which added an extra element of creativity!
