Smoking & Blessing Ceremonies

School News

January 31, 2024

We celebrated the very first day back with an important blessing and smoking ceremony for all of our students, staff and families.

We gathered together to start our school year. We brought together the ancient ceremony of smoking and our Catholic tradition of blessing with water. For thousands of years our First Nations People have employed smoking ceremonies to cleanse places and people of bad spirits to promote the well-being of their people as well as guests on Country. Ms Di Appleby led us in this beautiful smoking for all our of students and staff across our two campuses.

We were all blessed with Holy Water by Father Liam. The holy water that we use for blessings reminds us of the Sacrament of Baptism. It gives us spiritual protection and helps make our school a place of positivity and peace. It reminds us to give thanks to the Lord for the gift of education. We were able to recognise, honour and pray for our College community as the year begins.

We feel strong in our liyan and blessed to have experienced smoking and water blessing to start our school year in a strong and cleansed way. We look forward to a wonderful 2024.
