Our College was thrilled to welcome a group of students from Taiji, Japan, as part of our Colleges long-standing Sister City relationship between Broome and Taiji. Their visit marked a significant cultural exchange, filled with unforgettable experiences, new and old friendships, and shared learning.

The visit began with a heartfelt civic reception hosted by the Shire of Broome, where local leaders and community members gathered to officially welcome the students. Speeches, smiles, and cultural gifts set the tone for a week of connection and celebration.

The students were treated to a breathtaking whale-watching tour along Broome’s stunning coastline, where they witnessed humpback whales breaching and playing in the turquoise waters. Later, they experienced the magic of Cable Beach with a sunset camel ride, an iconic Broome tradition followed by a relaxed picnic as the sun dipped below the horizon.
Immersion into Australian school life was a highlight for many of the student exchange group. Taiji students joined primary campus classes, engaging in hands-on learning and sharing aspects of Japanese culture with their young peers. At our secondary campus, they cheered and participated in the annual sports carnival, embracing the energy and spirit of friendly competition.

Throughout their stay, the students explored Broome’s rich history and natural beauty, from Chinatown and Town Beach to the Japanese Cemetery and Gantheaume Point. Each site offered a deeper understanding of Broome’s multicultural heritage and its unique ties to Japan.

This immersion experience was more than just sightseeing; it was about building bridges. The friendships formed, stories exchanged, and laughter shared will continue to strengthen the bond between Broome and Taiji for years to come.

We thank our guests from Taiji for bringing their warmth, curiosity, and culture to our community. We look forward to our students attending Taiji in coming years as part of the St Mary’s College and Taiji immersion program.
