Families, friends, and community members gathered at the Primary Yarning Circle for a magical evening of Stories Under the Stars. With the Kimberley night sky as the backdrop, the event celebrated the power of storytelling to connect people, culture, and place.
The evening began with an Acknowledgment of Country from Ms Janenell, recognising the Yawuru people as the Traditional Custodians of the land and honouring the deep history of storytelling that has taken place here for thousands of years.
Nine storytellers shared their voices throughout the night, each bringing something unique and entertaining. Highlights included Janessa from the Kids Research Institute, who shared insights from the Missing Piece Surveillance Study alongside children’s storybooks. An entertaining tale and painting was shared by Neville Poelina carrying a special message about different fish that we find around Broome. Ben Court, Tom Gannon, Kirsty Buckley, Father Liam Ryan, Staci Bradley, and Jennie Jago also took to the stage, each weaving stories that inspired laughter, reflection, and connection.
Our wonderful Parents and Friends provided hot Milos and cookies and delicious curries were served by Monette and Ronaldo Saraza to keep the crowd well fed.
The evening ended on a joyful note with the Year 6 students, who closed the program with a playful parody of a song that invited the whole audience to join in.
Assistant Principal Ms Keryn Moase, who guided the evening, reflected: “Nights like this remind us how important it is to stop, listen, and connect. These stories stay with us and continue to spark new ones.”
Stories Under the Stars was a celebration not only of storytelling, but also of community — a reminder that when we gather, listen, and share, we continue an ancient tradition under the same Kimberley stars.
