‘Above and Below’ with Edison Robots

Last week, our Year 8 extension students launched into an exciting new STEAM module titled Above and Below—a hands-on exploration of the world around (and beneath) us. This innovative unit challenges students to combine science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics to investigate how people interact with both natural and built environments, above ground and underground.

To start the module, students worked in small teams using Edison V3 robots, applying coding and problem-solving skills in a real-world context. Their mission will be to program the robots to navigate obstacle courses that represent underground tunnels and above-ground pathways—simulating how technology can be used in search and rescue missions, infrastructure maintenance, or space and ocean exploration.

With curiosity, creativity, and a healthy dose of trial and error, students quickly became confident in programming their robots and testing different extension solutions.

This project is part of a module where students will eventually design their own Above or Below invention, applying design thinking to solve real-world challenges in their own community.

We can’t wait to see what they come up with next!
