The tandem bike at St Mary’s College has become a wonderful way to support inclusion, teamwork and confidence building across our campus. The bike is available for students who are not yet confident about riding or who are still developing their bike riding skills, allowing them to participate safely alongside their peers.
Recently, the tandem bike was taken to the Year 7 Retreat at Broome Camp School, where it quickly became a favourite activity. During free time, capable riders were able to enjoy riding the bike independently, while students needing additional support were paired with an adult pilot so they could still participate fully in the bike riding activities at a level suited to their needs.
The tandem bike was a huge success, with students learning the importance of communication, cooperation, and taking turns. Staff even introduced timers to help manage the excitement of students eagerly waiting for their turn to be either the pilot (front rider) or the passenger (back rider).
It was fantastic to see students encouraging one another, building confidence, and sharing such a positive and inclusive experience together.
