From Sunday 7 June to Friday 12 June, St Mary’s College Year 10 students embarked on a memorable retreat to Perth, embracing the theme of Future Pathways, Team Building and Reflection. Based at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp, students enjoyed a week of learning, exploration and personal growth as they looked ahead to the opportunities and challenges that await them beyond school.
A key focus of the retreat was helping students explore future education and career pathways. The cohort visited Curtin University and the University of Notre Dame Australia, gaining valuable insights into tertiary education and campus life. Students also toured the Construction Futures Centre in Belmont, where they learned about the diverse career opportunities available within the building and construction industries.
Throughout the week, students participated in a range of activities designed to strengthen teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. Highlights included a “City After Dark” tour, which provided practical lessons in urban awareness and personal safety, as well as engaging Virtual Escape Room challenges that encouraged collaboration and critical thinking.
The retreat also included a variety of cultural and recreational experiences. Students explored the natural beauty of Kings Park, visited the West Coast Eagles training facility, and gained a deeper appreciation of Western Australia’s history through tours of the Fremantle Maritime Museum and Fremantle Prison. A special highlight was a social bowling afternoon with students from Sacred Heart College, providing an opportunity to build new friendships and connections.
Faith and reflection remained at the heart of the retreat experience. On Thursday, students celebrated a meaningful Year 10 Mass and Vocations Reflection Activity, transforming a space into a chapel using local flora and symbolic items collected throughout the week. This reflective experience encouraged students to consider their personal journeys, future aspirations and the many ways they can contribute to their communities. The day concluded with a Christian Service Activity, followed by some well-earned leisure time with shopping and dinner at Karrinyup Shopping Centre.
When the Year 10 cohort touched down at Broome Airport on Friday afternoon, they returned tired but deeply fulfilled after a rewarding week away. Students came home with broader horizons, a clearer understanding of future study and career possibilities, stronger friendships, and many treasured memories.
