From 28–30 April, St Mary’s College was proud to host the WA Bushfoods Cooking Competition workshops, bringing together Year 10 and 11 students from St Mary’s College, La Grange Remote Community School and One Arm Point Remote Community School for three exciting days of hands-on learning.

Led by talented chefs Tanya and Melissa from Prepare Produce Provide, students were introduced to innovative dessert-making techniques while exploring the use of native Australian ingredients. The workshops showcased impressive creations including a croquembouche finished with spun sugar, refreshing boab sherbet, wattleseed chocolate, and delicate friands featuring cluster figs and finger lime.

Throughout the sessions, students developed new skills in advanced dessert techniques, creative plating, and confidently incorporating bushfoods into modern recipes. The enthusiastic atmosphere encouraged students to experiment, collaborate and push their culinary boundaries.

A big thanks must go to the Broome Airport for the support in allowing our students to participate in these workshops and competition.  The experience was both engaging and inspiring, providing students with knowledge and skills they will continue to use as they complete their assessment tasks and prepare for their upcoming in-class cooking competition. It was a memorable opportunity that celebrated culture, creativity and the joy of cooking.
