The board is set and the pieces are in motion as the new Tournament Chess Club officially begins at St Mary’s College, providing students with exciting opportunities to strengthen their strategic thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills. The initiative brings together students with experienced competitive chess players from our neighbours, at The University of Notre Dame Australia, creating a unique partnership that encourages learning, confidence and connection beyond the classroom. Through the club, students are exploring advanced tactics, sharpening their gameplay and gaining valuable insights into tournament-level chess.
From mastering opening moves to developing winning endgame strategies, students are discovering that every move counts. The club has already generated enthusiasm among participants, who are enjoying both the challenge and camaraderie that chess provides.
Our College proudly acknowledges the outstanding leadership and vision of Director of Extension and Learning Innovation, Mrs Zoe Court, and Notre Dame College Chaplain, Tom Gannon, for masterminding this exciting opportunity. Their collaboration has strengthened the connection between the University and College communities, creating meaningful pathways for students to engage with higher education experiences while building important lifelong skills.
