St Mary’s College students proudly played a leading role in the Shire of Broome’s Official Opening Event, celebrating the longstanding partnership between Broome and Taiji Town, Japan, and warmly welcoming visiting Taiji students and representatives. The event, supported by the Shire of Broome, St Mary’s College and members of the local Japanese community, highlighted the strong cultural and educational connections that continue to be celebrated between the two communities.
Students from across the College showcased their talents throughout the celebrations. The St Mary’s Dance Stars, College Choir, and Secondary Dance students delivered outstanding performances, entertaining guests and demonstrating the spirit, creativity and inclusiveness of the College community.
A special highlight of the event was the participation of the visiting Taiji students, who confidently took to the stage to introduce themselves in English. Their presentations were warmly received by the audience and reflected the courage and enthusiasm that underpin international student exchanges. The Taiji students then led a Japanese singing performance, joined by St Mary’s College students as backup singers and dancers. The collaborative act provided a wonderful example of cultural exchange in action, with students from both communities sharing their talents and working together to create a memorable performance.
Shire President Chris Mitchell spoke about the importance of the partnership between Broome and Taiji, acknowledging its historical significance and the value of maintaining strong international friendships. He reflected on the positive impact the relationship has had on both communities and the opportunities it continues to create for future generations. St Mary’s College Principal Coby Rhatigan also addressed attendees, highlighting the important role young people play in sustaining and strengthening the partnership, recognising students are the future of this partnership. The opportunities to learn from one another, develop intercultural understanding, and build lasting friendships are incredibly valuable. Experiences like these help our students grow as global citizens while deepening their appreciation of different cultures.
The event was a celebration of friendship, collaboration and shared learning, reinforcing the enduring connection between Broome and Taiji.
