St Mary’s College on the Kimberley Open Studios Trail

School News

Our amazing Visual Arts students were invited to showcase their artwork in the 2026 Kimberley Open Studios Trail. The Kimberley Open Studios Trail is an event held by Kimberley Artists Network (KAN) and involves many local artists and galleries opening their studios to the public over a weekend. This event attracts many tourists to our region and celebrates the unique talent and creativity of Kimberley artists.

Our exhibition was held at The Tree House, a beautiful garden space built around a 1500-year-old Boab tree. Students from Years 7-12 exhibited their Semester One artworks and artist statements. Throughout the weekend we had 124 visitors to the exhibition and received overwhelming positive feedback on the creativity, talent and conceptual ideas within the artworks.

Our exhibition included a display of First Nations portraits created by Year 8 and 9 students to coincide with the beginning of NAIDOC Week. We created an interactive experience for visitors ‘The Arty Bald Prize’ based on Australia’s major art competition ‘The Archibald Prize’. Guests were invited to cast their vote for their favourite portrait. The winner was Olando Gregory for his outstanding portrait of Brenton Ezra McKenna.

The exhibition concluded on Sunday with a special afternoon tea event for families of the students participating. It was wonderful to celebrate the student’s effort and creativity and celebrate the vital role that the Arts play in education, personal identity and wellbeing. I would like to thank the students Nancy, Imogen, Skylar and Cherry who helped supervise the exhibition over the weekend and Trish Pepper who invited St Mary’s College to use her beautiful garden for the show.
