Last Thursday, the School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) visited St Mary’s to deliver a series of Career Tasters for our Year 9 students. Working in small groups, students had the opportunity to experience aspects of three different career pathways: marine biology and tourism, plumbing, and construction.

During the marine biology session, students explored the impact of human activity on marine ecosystems and considered how sustainable tourism can help people experience the beauty of the ocean while protecting its natural environment. In the plumbing workshop, students investigated how water is delivered to homes before designing, building, and testing a functioning tap. The construction session provided hands-on learning as students developed knot-tying skills and practised applying them in real-life situations.

The SIDE Mini Roadshow brings experienced professionals to regional and remote communities, giving students valuable insights into a range of industries and career opportunities. We were delighted to offer this experience to our Year 9 students as part of their ongoing Career Taster program, helping them broaden their understanding of future pathways and possibilities.
