Students from Jarrayirr Buru on our primary campus embraced an unforgettable experience, taking part in the Ocean Heroes inclusive surfing program at the iconic Cable Beach.
Designed to cater for participants of all abilities, the Ocean Heroes program provided students with the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones while developing new skills in a safe and supportive environment. For many, it was their first time entering larger ocean waves or standing on a surfboard – an exciting and sometimes daunting challenge that was met with courage and determination.
Throughout the day, students demonstrated our college values including remarkable courage and resilience as they took to the water. Guided by experienced instructors and supported by our incredible Jarrayirr Buru staff, each student was encouraged to progress at their own pace, celebrating personal achievements both big and small. The smiles and cheers along the shoreline reflected the strong sense of accomplishment felt by all involved.
Equally inspiring was the way students supported one another. Encouragement flowed freely as classmates celebrated each wave caught and each milestone reached, reinforcing the spirit of inclusion and teamwork that underpins our college community.
The excursion not only provided a fun and active day out, but also helped build confidence, independence, and a willingness to try new things. Experiences like these play an important role in fostering personal growth and resilience in young people.
Students were outstanding ambassadors for St Mary’s College, representing our college with pride, positivity, and respect throughout the day.
