Our College proudly celebrates the incredible opportunity afforded to eleven of our students who, for the first time, were invited to attend the prestigious Madalah Education Days in Perth. As recipients of Madalah Scholarships, these students embarked on a three-day journey designed to inspire, connect and empower young people through education, life-skills and future pathways, whilst remaining connect to their culture and community.
The adventure began with excitement and anticipation as students along with the fabulous Ms Tessima and Mr Lawrence touched down in Perth in the early evening. Eager to begin their Madalah experience, the group made their way to Optus Stadium for an AFL clash between the Fremantle Dockers and Hawthorn Hawks. A special thank you goes to Ben DeMao, a valued member of our College community, for helping make this memorable experience possible.
Although the group arrived after the first half, the vibrant atmosphere ensured an unforgettable introduction to the trip, with the Dockers’ exciting comeback adding to the sense of energy and connection. Following the match, students navigated the busy post-game crowds before travelling to Camp Wattle Grove. A few unexpected detours along the way only added to the adventure, with students finally settling in for the night with positive spirits and a strong sense of camaraderie.
The following day saw students fully immerse themselves in learning and connection at the Madalah Education Workshop held at Claremont Showgrounds. Joining peers from five different schools, students worked in age-based groups and engaged in sessions focused on teamwork, creativity, life-skills and financial literacy. A highlight of the day was seeing students independently build connections, exchanging contact details and demonstrating confidence in networking with others. These authentic interactions reflected the growing maturity and initiative of our students.
In the afternoon, our group visited St George’s College where they were warmly welcomed by College Warden Neil Walker and former St Mary’s College student and current Madalah scholarship recipient, Llewelyn (Llewey) Sloan. During a guided tour and dinner in the college dining hall, students gained valuable insight into residential and university life. Llewey’s reflections on living and studying away from home were both inspiring and reassuring for our students as they consider their own future pathways.
The day concluded with a range of supervised evening activities in Perth’s CBD, including shopping and an exciting escape room challenge, rounding out a day filled with growth, independence and connection.
On the final day, students enjoyed a well-earned sleep-in before preparing for their journey home. While the trip was short, it left a lasting impression, with many students wishing for more time to continue the experience. At Perth Airport, students had the opportunity to practise self check-in with staff support, further developing independence and practical travel skills. This final activity highlighted just how much confidence and capability had grown throughout the three days.
The Madalah Education Days provided a rich and inspiring experience for our students, strengthening their confidence, independence and sense of possibility. Across the three days, students embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm – building new friendships, developing valuable life skills and gaining insight into future educational and career pathways.
We are incredibly proud of the way our students represented our College, consistently demonstrating respect, responsibility and kindness. Experiences such as these play a powerful role in shaping aspirations and reinforcing the importance of education as a pathway to future success.
