St Mary’s College was delighted to welcome the Kimberley Regional Alliance for Students in Health (KRASH) team back for another engaging and inspiring incursion, working with our Year 11 and 12 students, Year 8s, and a targeted group of ATAR Human Biology students.
The sessions for Year 11 and 12 students centred around a powerful simulated scenario in which a patient was injured after being knocked off an e-scooter. The experience followed every stage of care, from first responders at the scene, through hospital treatment, to occupational therapy follow up. This immersive approach allowed students to see firsthand that careers in health care extend far beyond doctors and nurses, encompassing a wide and diverse range of professions.
Following the simulation, students rotated through seven interactive stations, engaging in hands-on activities that brought each of these professions to life. The excitement in the room was unmistakable, with students describing the experience as “inspiring and informative,” and “an enjoyable, authentic experience.”
ATAR Human Biology students then participated in a more focused workshop, where they explored pathways into health care careers in greater depth. This smaller group setting provided valuable opportunities for discussion about their individual aspirations and even gave students the chance to practise practical skills, such as applying casts to each other’s arms.
Our Year 8 students also took part in a “lite” version of the program, offering them an engaging introduction and sparking enthusiasm for future KRASH incursions in the years ahead.
With so many of our students interested in pursuing careers in the health care industry, and many others still exploring their options, we are grateful for the time, energy, and expertise the enthusiastic KRASH team shared with our community.
