During a busy Term, our Year 11 and 12 General Materials Design Technology students focused on bringing simple working drawings of a coffee table to life. Using these plans as a guide, each student constructed their own timber coffee table, developing both practical skills and confidence in the workshop.
Throughout the project, students learned to balance creativity with practicality. They considered important design elements such as strength, stability, and overall appearance, making adjustments where needed to ensure their tables were both functional and well-finished.
As the term progressed, students built a range of essential woodworking skills. They gained experience in safely using workshop tools and equipment, as well as applying joinery techniques to assemble their projects. While challenges did arise, including occasional miscuts and the need to revise parts of their designs, these situations helped students build problem-solving skills and resilience.
By the end of the term, each student had completed a coffee table they could be proud of. The finished pieces reflect the effort and learning that took place throughout the project, as well as each student’s attention to detail and commitment to improving their skills.
