Our college marked a significant milestone this week, proudly hosting the re-launch of Catholic Mission within our Broome Diocese. The occasion was made especially meaningful with the visit of Ms Shendelle Mullane, Province Director for Western Australia and Diocesan Director for Bunbury, who joined newly appointed Director of Mission, Sr Vicki to lead the launch.
The celebration brought together students, staff, and families in a vibrant college assembly, where Sr Vicki and Ms Mullane shared inspiring insights into the purpose and global impact of Catholic Mission. Their presentation highlighted the organisation’s longstanding commitment to supporting vulnerable communities around the world through education, healthcare, and faith-based outreach.
Speaking to the assembled community, Ms Shendelle emphasised the importance of solidarity and compassion in action. “Catholic Mission invites each of us to look for Jesus, through simple acts, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.” Ms Shendelle clearly articulated how students can become active participants in this mission. She spoke passionately about the ways young people can contribute through awareness, prayer, and practical initiatives that foster empathy and justice.
A highlight of the visit was a series of interactive workshops, engaging students through action, these were held with Year Five and Year Ten students. These sessions centred on the creation of ‘sockballs’ – handmade soccer balls crafted from old socks, plastic bags, and other discarded materials. The activity provided both a hands-on learning opportunity and a powerful reminder of the realities faced by children in less advantaged parts of the world. As students worked together to construct their sockballs, they reflected on how such simple items can bring joy and connection despite limited resources. The workshops culminated in an energetic sockball shootout, with students testing their creations on the College grounds. The lively atmosphere underscored the message of resilience and creativity, while reinforcing a sense of unity with children living in poverty globally.
Another deeply meaningful moment of the visit was the participation of Year Five students in the online World Mission Rosary, ensuring a Prayerful Connection Across Australia. At midday, classrooms were transformed into a space of prayer and reflection as students joined others across Australia in this shared spiritual experience. With Sr Vicki and Ms Mullane leading the session, students learned about the significance of the World Mission Rosary – prayed across different continents to symbolise global unity in faith. While only leaders were visible on screen, the voices of our students resonated across the country as they joined in the responses, creating a powerful sense of collective worship. The session was particularly special as it took place during the final week of the national online World Mission Rosary, making St Mary’s contribution both timely and memorable.
The launch of Catholic Mission at St Mary’s College represents an important step forward for the Broome Diocese. Through initiatives like these, the College continues to foster a culture of service, compassion, and global awareness among its students and strengthening our mission. This was a wonderful opportunity for our community to engage with the broader mission of the Church, inspiring our students to think beyond themselves and consider how they can contribute to a more just and compassionate world.
As the College looks ahead, the partnership with Catholic Mission is set to grow, providing further opportunities for students to live out their faith through meaningful action. The visit of Sr Vicki and Ms Shendelle Mullane has left a lasting impression – one that will continue to shape the hearts and minds of our community as they embrace their role in the global mission of the Church.
