A group of students in Years 2–5 at St Mary’s College, Primary, have enjoyed an exciting opportunity over the past five weeks, taking part in weekly soccer clinics delivered by Football Futures and their experienced coach, Mike Doyle.
The clinics provided a welcoming and supportive environment where all students could participate, regardless of their prior experience. Each session was designed to be inclusive, engaging and fun, with a strong focus on developing fundamental soccer skills through games, teamwork and active participation.
From the very first session, students demonstrated enthusiasm and curiosity as they worked on skills such as dribbling, passing and shooting. The coach along with Jarrayirr Buru Teaching Assistants, created a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere, allowing students to build confidence at their own pace while enjoying the social aspects of sport.
A key feature of the program was its emphasis on accessibility and inclusion. Students of varying abilities were supported to join in, collaborate with peers and celebrate success together. This approach reflects the broader mission of Football Futures, which uses football to create confidence, connection and opportunities for all involved.
The clinics also highlighted the importance of sport in building friendships and a sense of belonging. Students were seen encouraging one another, celebrating achievements and developing positive attitudes towards physical activity and teamwork.
Importantly, the experience does not need to end at school. Families are encouraged to explore Football Futures programs within the Broome community, where students can continue developing their skills in a similarly inclusive and supportive environment. These programs are designed to ensure that all young people have access to sport and can enjoy being part of a team, both socially and developmentally.
