At the end of Term 2, St Mary’s College was delighted to welcome four students from Xavier College as part of a two-week cultural exchange program.
During their stay, the Xavier students joined classes alongside their host brothers, experiencing the daily rhythms of school life in Broome while forming new friendships and connections. The exchange began with a warm welcome dinner, bringing together students, families and staff to meet, share stories and begin what would be a memorable fortnight.
Beyond the classroom, the visiting students had the opportunity to experience some of the unique attractions and cultural experiences of the Kimberley. Highlights included fishing at Willie Creek, a visit to Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park and three days immersed in the rich culture and history of Beagle Bay.
The exchange created valuable learning opportunities for everyone involved. Living and learning alongside one another encouraged students to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of different communities, cultures and ways of life.
For our St Mary’s students, welcoming visitors into their classrooms, homes and community provided opportunities to develop leadership, responsibility and communication skills while sharing what makes Broome special. In turn, the Xavier students experienced the rich culture, natural beauty and welcoming community spirit of the Kimberley.
The program concluded with a special farewell dinner, celebrating the friendships formed, stories shared and memorable experiences enjoyed throughout the fortnight.
The Xavier Immersion was a wonderful reminder that learning extends far beyond the classroom. Through connection, culture and shared experiences, students returned with greater confidence, cultural awareness and an appreciation for the importance of community, friendship and respect.
