Digital Learning

Digital literacy helps expand children’s knowledge and competencies. It is essential schools provide students an opportunity to develop 21st century learning technologies and skills.

St Mary’s College provides these opportunities by simply searching for information to using apps, being digitally literate exposes our students to so many forms of learning. Videos, podcasts, social media pages, search engines, educational apps, and learning websites present various information to your child.

Learning in Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies builds on the dispositions developed in the early years. The Pre-Primary Digital Learning curriculum focuses on practical and applied knowledge and understanding of process and production skills. Digital Technologies focuses on developing foundational skills in computational thinking and provides opportunities to engage in personal experiences using digital systems.

Early years explicit teaching of digital learning also introduces students to cyber safety education and provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe in online environments from an early age.

At St Mary’s College, digital learning in the Early Years is designed to be simple, playful, and developmentally appropriate. Young children learn best through hands-on exploration, so digital tools are introduced gently and purposefully to support curiosity, creativity, and early problem-solving.

Students use shared iPads and other technologies to explore age-appropriate apps, digital stories, photos, and creative tools. These experiences help build their early digital literacy, from learning how to search safely to engaging with interactive learning resources such as videos, podcasts, educational apps, and learning websites.

Our Early Years digital programme also lays the foundations for Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies as students grow. They begin developing practical skills, early computational thinking, and an understanding of how digital systems help us in everyday life.

Importantly, children are introduced to cyber safety education from the very beginning. Through simple language and explicit teaching, students learn how to stay safe online and begin building the responsible habits that will support them throughout their schooling.

Our goal in the Early Years is to use technology to enhance—not replace—meaningful, hands-on learning. Every experience is carefully scaffolded to ensure technology supports healthy development and sets students up for success in later years.
